El Guincho- Bombay
Im so sorry for posting another video. But actually Im not, as this one is truly amazing and I haven't seen such a great music video in a long time. Additionally it is an awesome song, so I thought its definitely worth to share! Its beautifully shot and carries a very fashionable and cinematic spirit of the 70ies, lets just say Fellini meets V Magazine. El Guincho- Bombay, directed by Nicolas Mendez.

Another kiss and you'll be mine
I wonder what happened in the 80's that made video directors think "Hey, what we don't have 5 hot chicks pretending to be playing music without any sense of rhythm?". That is at least what British photographer and director Terence Donovan thought in 86, and I could never thank him enough for it.
I personally would be gutted to be the drummer.
In 88, über-cool rapper Tone Loc (wait, did I really say über? sorry) responds with his "Wild thing" video:
So, slick your hair back, don't be shy with lipstick and smoky eyes, grab a portable turntable, a guitar and a keyboard.... and more important do the wild thing!

Princesses
I'm not going to bore you with my everlasting love for Prince, because everybody loves him anyway. But I still love him more than anyone. So, Prince has always been surrounded with girls. The pattern seems to be as follows: He would pick a gorgeous girl with the coolest origins (say something like Scottish, Guatemalan, Iranian and Malian) and long hair who can sing, dance, play drums or guitar and act (the latest refers to Carmen Electra). Finds them a sexy, cheesy, greek stage name and dress them in underwear. Follow from this: Apollonia, Vanity, Diamond, Pearl, Sheila E...
In 1981, Prince decided to create a girl band, "Hookers", later changed to "Vanity 6" (the explanation of '6' is because they were 3 women x 2 breasts each). The group was composed of Susan Moonsie, Brenda Bennett and Denise Matthews aka Vanity. Prince wanted to name her Vagina, and I still can't figure out why she'd dismiss it.

"Nasty Girls" is a tune. Later, Vanity was replaced by Apollonia, who played in the Purple Rain movie. The band was rebaptised Apollonia 6 and sang 'Sex Shooter".
Ok, not that many hits, but they were really, really cool.
Another inseparable item is Diamond and Pearl, aka Rubia Lamorte and Lori Elle who were not twins but had the best moves in "Get off", "Cream" and "Diamonds and Pearls".

One of his key-character was the oh-so-cool-it-hurts drummer/singer/musical director Sheila E., who worked on Purple Rain, Sign O' The Time and LoveSexy. She also worked with Ringo Starr, Beyonce, Phil Collins, Cindy Lauper... Click here to watch her hit "The Glamorous Life".

At some point he got married to Mayte Garcia, for who he wrote 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World"...

Nice one, geezer.
It's been 15 years since "Common People"came out. Since the early stage of his career as the incarnation of britpop, wearing skin tight polyester shirts, velvet flary suits and lesbiannesque haircut topped by a pair of sunglasses, to becoming a Parisian dandy with a twist (i.e heeled boots and infamous rectangular specs), I haven't stopped fancying Jarvis Cocker. Who has turned 47 (aouch) and lives in Paris (yes!) to raise his son, Albert (aww).
Perhaps it's because of his name, Jarvis. Or the things he says when asked what is his greatest talent: "It's to sing and move my hands at the same time. It's not something I've thought through; it's not that I'm trying to do signing. But it's nice - you can move your hands and shape the words. Shirley Bassey's very good at it".
Or his lyrics, telling little chapters of people's life. To me, he is probably one of the wittiest, funniest and most depressing songwriters of all time. I would love to sit in a greasy spoon and chat about eavesdropping, cheating and 90's raves... And maybe about the time he rushed the 96 Brit Awards stage to display his derriere to Michael Jackson during one of Michael's Christ complex performances. For some Derek Zoolander action by Jarvis, click here
